RECOMMENDATION(S):

Declare September 2017 as Suicide Prevention Month for Contra Costa County, as recommended by the Health Services Director.

BACKGROUND:

Someone dies by suicide every 11.9 minutes in the United States. In 2015, 44,193 individuals died by suicide in our country (2015 is the most recent year for which we have official statistics). Suicide is the tenth leading cause of all deaths and the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 15 and 24. In Contra Costa County, 108 individuals took their lives in 2015. It is a generally accepted belief that for each completed suicide, there are about 100 attempts which means that approximately 11,000 individuals attempt suicide each year in this county. Firearm is the leading method of suicide both nationally and in the county.
