RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Health Services Director, or designee, to accept Grant Award #78-004 with the State of California Health and Human Services Agency, California Department of Public Health (CDPH), to pay the County an amount not to exceed $390,488, for Immunization Champions – Supporting Schools with Immunization Workforce Development funding, for the period from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Acceptance of the grant award will result in payment to the County of up to $390,488 from the CDPH. No County match is required.

BACKGROUND:

In the wake of the pandemic, many children in California are behind on their routine immunizations. In addition, immunization rates against COVID-19 in ages 5-11 remain low. There are about 1,000 schools in California with kindergarten immunization rates below 90%, making them vulnerable to vaccine-preventable disease, such as measles, pertussis and chicken pox.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)

These grant funds will allow the Health Services Department to follow-up with families whose students are behind on immunizations, conduct back-to-school immunization events, support schools with any future COVID-19 vaccine mandates, and provide technical assistance to schools with regard to reporting immunization coverage levels for students as required by California law, through June 30, 2023.
