RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Health Services Director, or designee, to execute, on behalf of the County, Contract Amendment Agreement #26-283-11 with Samuel Merritt University, a California non-profit public benefit corporation, effective June 1, 2021, to add a physician assistant program for its participants to receive training and experience at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Health Centers.

FISCAL IMPACT:

This is a nonfinancial agreement.

BACKGROUND:

This contract meets the social needs of the County’s population by providing medical students including but not limited to, nursing program, physical therapist, occupational therapist and podiatry students to come to Contra Costa Regional Medical Center (CCRMC) and Health Centers for medical training. Samuel Merritt University has been providing training and clinical experience in the field of nursing students who are enrolled at Samuel Merritt University since April 1, 1995.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)

On March 31, 2020, the Board of Supervisors approved Unpaid Student Training Agreement #26-283-10 with Samuel Merritt University, to provide supervised field instruction at CCRMC and Health Centers to nursing, physical therapist, podiatry and occupational therapist students for the period April 1, 2020 through March 31, 2022.

Approval of Contract Amendment Agreement #26-283-11 will add a physician assistant program for its participants and continue providing training and clinical experience for students who are enrolled with Samuel Merritt University, through March 31, 2022.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If this contract amendment agreement is not approved, physician assistant participants will not receive supervised fieldwork experience at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center.
