RECOMMENDATION(S):

ADOPT Position Adjustment No. 25739 to reallocate the salary of the Public Defender Chief Investigator (6EH1) (unrepresented) position from B85 1805 ($97,153.002 - $118,090.077) to $125,269.879- $152,266.320 in the Office of the Public Defender's.

FISCAL IMPACT:

100% of the funding for this salary reallocation will come from the County General Fund. This will result in increase of approximately $45,000 in salary and benefit costs in FY 21/22.

BACKGROUND:

Based upon a salary survey results, the current salary scale for the Public Defender Chief Investigator position is the lowest in the Public Defender Offices in the nearby and comparable Bay Area counties. We are requesting that the Public Defender Chief Investigator salary be adjusted to be in line with those of comparable Bay Area counties. This position is currenlty vacant and this increase will strengthen the department's ability to recruit and retain qualified employees for this crucial position.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If the Chief Investigator's salary not adjusted, the Public Defender's Office will not be able to recruit and retain high-quality employees for this important position, given that it will not be able to compete with comparable roles in nearby Bay Area counties.
