BACKGROUND:
The District Attorney’s Office seeks to enter into an Agreement with the Public Rights Project (PRP). PRP is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering state and local prosecutors to affirmatively prosecute violations in the areas of civil rights, economic justice, consumer protection, and environmental litigation and enforcement. PRP administers a nationwide fellowship program in collaboration with state and local government agencies. Fellows must have an active bar membership in a U.S. state and a passion for public service. The fellowship is ideally suited for attorneys with 3-5 years of legal experience after law school, and a background in litigation. The fellowship pays an annual stipend funded and calculated by PRP based on the Fellow’s legal experience, cost of living in the Fellow’s placement city, and the average pay of other attorneys in the Fellow’s placement office.
The PRP will aim to place one (1) Fellow with the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office for a term of two (2) years beginning in the Fall of 2019. The Fellow will function as a volunteer attorney and only be involved in affirmative litigation work in the Special Operations Unit. Contra Costa County will provide no financial support to either the PRP, or its Fellow placed with the District Attorney’s Office.
This agreement includes a provision for Contra Costa County to indeminify PRP.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
The District Attorney's Office will be unable to receive a fellow through Public Rights Project for affirmative litigation work.
