RECOMMENDATION(S):

AUTHORIZE the Auditor-Controller to reimburse Deputy District Attorney Laura Delehunt in the amount of $465.47 for the purchase of a recumbent bicycle for use in alcohol awareness education programs in public schools.

FISCAL IMPACT:

$465.47; 100% Countywide Gang and Drug Trust fund

BACKGROUND:

In March, 2015, Deputy District Attorney Laura Delehunt purchased a recumbent bicycle from Amazon.com on behalf of the District Attorney's GIFT Program. This expenditure was approved by the committee responsible for dispersing GIFT Program funds. For more than a year, District Attorney personnel have employed this bicycle, in conjunction with "fatal vision" goggles, to demonstrate the effect of excessive alcohol consumption to local high school students so that they can experience firsthand how drastically drinking can affect hand-eye coordination. Unfortunately Deputy District Attorney Laura Delehunt misunderstood the District Attorney's directive to purchase this bicycle and she purchased it herself without complying strictly with county procurement policies.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

The employee will not be reimbursed for the costs related to procurement of the recumbent bike.

CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:

No impact.
