RECOMMENDATION(S):

ADOPT Position Adjustment Resolution No. 22291 to add one (1) permanent full-time Medical Social Worker II (X4VH) position at salary plan and grade 255-1590 ($5,754 - $6,994) in the Health Services Department. (Represented)

FISCAL IMPACT:

Upon approval, this request has an annual cost of approximately $138,390 with pension costs of $29,798 already included. This cost is budgeted with 68% Federal, 25% State, and 7% County General Fund.

BACKGROUND:

The Health Services Department is requesting to add one (1) Medical Social Worker II position allocated to the California Children Services Program within Public Health Division. The program currently serves over 4,200 children with serious and chronic health care needs. Many clients require psychosocial support to address their complex care management needs, linkages to resources such as Regional Center of the East Bay, Behavioral Health, and Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, and coordination within the foster care system. With only one Medical Social Worker with this caseload, a second position is necessary in order to reduce the workload by splitting it in half and making it manageable. Duties and responsibilities include conducting interviews with patients and relatives to obtain data regarding patient's physical, social and emotional history; identifying patient needs and making appropriate referrals; developing client care plans, and coordinating patient progress through the county health care system.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If this action is not approved, the California Children Services Program will not have adequate staff to meet patient needs which will adversely impact patient care services.
