RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $4,800 from the Keller Canyon Mitigation Fund to provide concerts at the Antioch Library for the period of October 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No Library Fund match.

BACKGROUND:

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
The Keller Canyon Mitigation Fund was set up in 1992, and serves the communities in Pittsburg and the surrounding area as a way to give back to communities impacted by the Keller Canyon Landfill. The Antioch Library received $3,564 in 2015 from Keller Canyon for a Kids Read! Program. Books were purchased with the funds and distributed to young children in the community. Several programs were held both in the library and in the community in conjunction with the grant. The grant application is for a series of programs to be held in the library called Concerts in the Library. The Library will plan and schedule eight free programs in the Library between October 2017 and June 2018. These programs will be open to families in the community, providing them with free, high-quality music programs featuring music from around the world.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

There will be no concerts in the library.

CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:

The grant will meet the outcome: Communities that are Safe and Provide a High Quality of Life for Children and Families. Children and their families will be invited to attend the concerts in the Library. Children will have the opportunity to listen to music from cultures all over the world, exposing them to a wide array of styles, instruments and rhythms. Their minds will be opened to a new world of music, and an understanding that different cultures can offer different musical experiences.
