RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Clerk-Recorder, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in an amount not to exceed $10,000 from the Contra Costa County Keller Canyon Mitigation Trust Fund for the Neighborhood Engagement Project.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The fiscal impact will be $10,000, 100% Keller Canyon Mitigation Funds. No General Fund match is required.

BACKGROUND:

This program benefits both community services and youth services by creating a mobile outreach and education program that reaches residents in their own neighborhoods.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
Program objectives are to increase citizen awareness and local involvement in civic issues. The program plans to do this by bringing information into the community, as well as providing assistance with civic processes, such as voter registration and voting. This will impact these communities by increasing involvement in the issues that affect their daily lives. Bay Point, Pittsburg, and Antioch residents are underrepresented in Contra Costa, both in voter registration and in voter turnout.

Once a week, program team members will support a satellite site to assist citizens with questions they may have, including access to voter registration status. Program staff will go into community schools to give presentations and emphasize the importance of being informed and participating in civic processes, like voting. Staff will also bring information to community events and local festivals and be a resource for information about voter registration and voting.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

These areas will continue to remain underrepresented and the community will not have access to these additional resources.
