RECOMMENDATION(S):

AUTHORIZE the District Attorney's Office to provide fifteen (15) Target gift cards in an amount of $50 each for a total of $750 for the Law Enforcement Introduction Program at Black Diamond Middle School in the Antioch Unified School District.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Funding is from the DA Asset Forfeiture Fund.

BACKGROUND:

On July 9, 2019, the Board of Supervisors ratified the Office of the District Attorney's purchase of $13,350 Target gift cards for Gun Buy-Back Events from October 2016. The balance of gift cards in the amount of $7,750 is being safeguarded and tracked in accordance with Administrative Bulletin 615, and authorization is being requested for their use.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
In conjunction with Junior Achievement, the Contra Costa District Attorney's office, and Deer Valley’s Law & Justice Academy are offering students at Black Diamond Middle School an opportunity to participate in a Law Enforcement Introduction Program. It is anticipated that 75 seventh graders from the Middle School will participate in a variety of activities around crime scene investigation and mock trial. Activities include a crime scene walk thru, a mini mock trial and an opportunity for career exploration with volunteers from the Contra Costa District Attorney's office. The objective of this program is to generate student interest in the Law & Justice Academy held at the local high school, as well as careers in public service.

The gift cards will be awarded to students demonstrating the highest level of case resolution and participation throughout the program.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If unapproved, the District Attorney's Office will not be able to provide already purchased gift cards to local students at Black Diamond Middle School for their participation in the Law Enforcement Introduction Program.
