This report provides an update to the Ad Hoc Sustainability Committee on the work of the County's Sustainability Coordinator since the Commission last met in February 2017. Key activities during this period included:
  • Assisted the Board of Supervisors in taking the Idle Free Pledge on April 25, in conjunction with Earth Day.The Board was recognized on local media as the first local government in the Bay Area to take the Pledge.
  • Facilitated administrative processes for the Board of Supervisors to appoint members and alternates to the Sustainability Commission. Assisted members and alternates in preparing for their first meeting which will occur on Monday, June 26, 2017, at which time the Commission will establish a standing meeting day/time.
  • Convened April 19 quarterly meeting of the Sustainability Exchange, a venue for anyone in Contra Costa County who works for a city, county, special district, or other organization with a governing board of elected officials. The meeting included a presentation from Betsy Burkhart, Director of the County's Office of Communications and Media. The Sustainability Exchange continues to draw multidisciplinary staff from diverse local government organizations. The next meeting will be hosted by the City of Concord.
  • Received notification that Contra Costa County's application to the Strategic Growth Council and Governor's Office of Planning and Research for a grant that will fund a Renewable Resource Potential Study has been accepted. This Study will (1) identify areas that are best sites for renewable resources, including solar, wind, biomass, and biogas, (2) identify modifications to current zoning ordinances that would facilitate deployment of renewable resources, and (3) work with disadvantaged communities in unincorporated areas to determine how they can benefit from local renewable energy.Staff is developing grant acceptance documents to bring to the Board of Supervisors for approval.Staff also is developing a Request for Proposals for the first task and coordinating with the cities to determine their interest in potentially participating in that study.
  • Coordinated with the Delta Stewardship Council and the Bay Conservation and Coordinated with the Delta Stewardship Council and the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) on an opportunity to extend the Adapting to Rising Tides (ART) study to eastern Contra Costa County.The Department of Conservation and Development (DCD) and BCDC will be presenting the results of the initial ART study to the Board on May 23, 2017.DCD will at that meeting recommend that the Board of Supervisors invite BCDC to extend the project.The Delta Stewardship Council is offering a grant to BCDC and the County to cover the costs of this work.
  • Presented the County's position on land use and school siting at a noontime seminar sponsored by SPUR on the recently approved State school facilities bond (Prop 51). Participated in the technical advisory group for the County's Green Infrastructure plan. Participated in planning meetings for the new County Administration building and Emergency Operations Center.
  • Collaborated with County staff working on topics including land use and transportation, Northern Waterfront Economic Development Initiative, North Richmond Urban Greening, Planning Integration Team for Community Health (PITCH), codes, solid waste, energy. Participated in regional activities.
