RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $10,000 from National Endowment for the Humanities to provide programming and materials for the period July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No Library Fund match.

BACKGROUND:

The Antioch and Prewett Libraries are applying for a National Endowment for the Humanities grant entitled Latino Americans: 500 Years of History. The grant will support exploration of the rich and varied history and cultural experiences of Latinos through community wide programming and development of materials such as oral histories and book collections. With a large demographic of Latino and Hispanic residents, the Antioch Libraries and community will benefit greatly from this grant. The grant will allow the library to reach out to an underserved population, encourage Latino/ Latina community pride, foster stronger communication among all residents and create partnerships with diverse community organizations.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

Programming and collection enhancement will not occur.

CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:

The grant will include a partnership with the Antioch School District, support curriculum grades 6- 12, and create an environment where children are ready to succeed in school. The grant will also foster cross cultural understanding among children, parents and caregivers, thus enhancing the quality of life for all.
