RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Sheriff-Coroner, or designee, to execute a contract with the West Contra Costa Unified School District to pay the County an amount not to exceed $257,500 to provide one School Resource Officer position for the term July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016. Ratify the contract for the term above.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No County Costs. $257,500.00, Revenue. Budgeted.

BACKGROUND:

The Sheriff's Office has been providing a School Resource Officer to the West Contra Costa Unified School District since spring-2006. The presence of the School Resource Officer impacts crime rates such as vandalism, drug and alcohol abuse, and gang violence on school grounds. Further, the School Resource Officer provides security, protection, and safety for students and staff. The School Resource Officer will develop and maintain comprehensive safety plans and strategies aimed at reducing campus crime, improving attendance, and providing a safe, secure, and peaceful school environment. The presence of the School Resource Officer has proved to be a benefit to the school, students, parents, and the community.



CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

The West Contra Costa Unified School District will not benefit from the presence of the School Resource Officer. The School Resource Officer provides security, protection, and safety for students and staff.
