BACKGROUND:

The Commission for Women was established in February 1989 to identify major economic, educational, and social concerns of women in Contra Costa County, and to reach and inform all women on a variety of issues. The Commission consists of 25 members (5 District and 20 At Large seats) and one alternate. The Internal Operations Committee reviews nominations to the 20 At Large seats and their Alternate. Terms for all Commission seats are three years.

At its meeting on February 19, the IOC considered and approved the preceding nominations. It should be noted that with the current number of commission vacancies, a meeting quorum based on authorized membership is difficult to achieve. Several commissions and committees have encountered this problem and are unable to meet Brown Act requirements. Nominations for new appointments are being ratified by less than a commission quorum. Limited staffing makes roster maintenance and member recruitment an ongoing challenge for many of the Board’s advisory bodies.

The IOC will bring further recommendations regarding the Commission for Women to the Board in 2009 with the triennial study on Board advisory bodies.
