RECOMMENDATION(S):

REFER the issue of Contra Costa County law enforcement participation and interaction with federal immigration authorities to the Public Protection Committee.

FISCAL IMPACT:

None.

BACKGROUND:

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
There has been growing public concern around the county, especially among immigrant communities, about the nature of local law enforcement interaction with federal immigration authorities. This concern has been increasing due to the current political environment and has impacted the willingness of residents of immigrant communities to access certain health and social services provided by community-based organizations. For example, the Executive Director of Early Childhood Mental Health has reported that a number of Latino families have canceled mental health appointments for their children due to concerns over being deported. It is timely and in the public interest to refer this issue to the Public Protection Committee.
