RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Purchasing Agent to execute, on behalf of the Sheriff-Coroner, a purchase order with Motor Coach Industries in the amount of $574,000 for a transportation bus for the Sheriff Detention AB 109 program.

FISCAL IMPACT:

100% AB109 funding allocation.

BACKGROUND:

The vendor, Motor Coach Industries (MCI), currently provides and builds inmate transportation motor coaches for the California Department of Corrections, Los Angeles County Sheriff, as well as other Sheriff's offices throughout the State of California.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
MCI's motor coaches are designed and engineered to have a useful lifespan of approximately 600,000 miles. MCI's motor and transmission combination are industry standard for large long-haul trucks designed to last a very long time, which is necessary considering the partitions and security features required for transportation of inmates. This coach also includes a bathroom facility, which gives the Detention Facility Transportation Unit the ability to transport inmates long distances without the need for frequent bathroom stops and disembarking of inmates at public facilities. This results in the movement of inmates being done in a more secure manner to public and personnel.
