RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept Library Services Technology Act grant in the amount of $3,000 from the California State Library, as administered by the California Center for the Book, to provide materials and services for the period of March 1, 2013 through August 31, 2013.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No library fund match.

BACKGROUND:

The receipt of this grant will allow the Hercules Library to participate in the California Center for the Book administered program called “Book to Action”. Book to Action builds on the traditional book club concept, but in addition to providing an opportunity to collectively read and discuss a book, Book to Action enables readers to put their new-found knowledge into action by engaging in a community service project related to the book’s topic. If the Hercules Library receives a Book to Action grant, the community will read the book “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” by Barbara Kingsolver. Participants will then work with the Hercules Sustainable Community Garden Club and the local Boy Scouts to build raised community garden beds in Hercules for senior citizens.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If the funds are not granted then the library will not participate in the Book to Action program.

CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:

Engaging the local Boy Scouts in this project creates a cross-generational activity that encourages strong relations between youth and adults of all ages and promotes a healthy lifestyle through sustainable gardening. The program supports the community outcome of Children and Youth Healthy and Preparing for Productive Adulthood.
