RECOMMENDATION(S):

Approve and Authorize the County Administrator, or designee, to execute a contract with the State of California, California Arts Council, to pay the County an amount not to exceed $1,000 to coordinate the County's Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest for FY 2012-13.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The County will receive $1,000 to facilitate and coordinate the local Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest. No County match is required.

BACKGROUND:

Contra Costa County's annual Poetry Out Loud contest is coordinated by the Friends of AC5. Student from area high schools compete by memorize and reciting poems. Winners are acknowledged by the Board of Supervisors.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
Established by the Board of Supervisors in December 1996 as an official County commission and the authorized County partner with the California Arts Council, the Arts and Culture Commission (AC5) first applied for and received funding from the State-Local Partnership Program in July 1995 for fiscal year 1995-1996. Since that time, the Board of Supervisors has designated and reaffirmed the Arts and Culture Commission as the authorized partner of the State-Local Partnership Program of the California Arts Council. This designation allows the County to apply for and accept funding from the State to enhance art and culture programs in the county.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

The County will not receive grant funds to coordinate the Poetry Out Loud competition.

CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:

Not Applicable.
