RECOMMENDATION(S):

Approve and authorize the Purchasing Agent, on behalf of the Health Services Department, to execute a Purchase Order with General Electric Healthcare, Inc. in the amount of $289,861.602 for a Digital Mammography System for Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Contra Costa Health Centers.

FISCAL IMPACT:

100% Enterprise Fund I.

BACKGROUND:

Digital Mammography was first FDA approved about 10 years ago and this technology has continued to surpass current analog mammography equipment. The FDA estimates that 70% of U.S. mammography facilities have Digital Mammography. Digital Mammography delivers exceptionally sharp digital images, with better contrast and consistency at the lowest possible radiation dose. Converting to digital mammography means building a complete imaging workflow that includes image capture, distribution, review, and archiving which ultimately will conserve time and help improve patient outcomes. Early detection of breast cancer means faster intervention and dramatically improved survival rates. The investment in this breast imaging technology addresses the current clinical needs and also provides us with the platform to future application for women’s breast health

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If this Purchase Order is not approved, the Department would have to determine which women patient will have their exams performed on the Digital system vs the analog equipment. Also, this would create serious workflow issue with the radiologist reading from two different imaging modalities (Digital or Film). Not purchasing Digital Mammography would ultimately have a negative impact on our ability to care for our patients.
