RECOMMENDATION(S):
ADOPT Resolution declaring February 13-19, 2011 as PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK in Contra Costa County.
FISCAL IMPACT:
A potential, unknown cost savings may be realized by the county for the cost of care because of the effect of promoting awareness and wellness in an effort to reduce health and health care disparities.
BACKGROUND:
With the United Nations declaring 2011 “The International Year of People of African Descent” and also mental health being one of the leading causes of disability in America, declaring the aforementioned week as “People of African Descent Mental Health Awareness Week” in Contra Costa County, will promote and increase mental health awareness in the county. This awareness will unite consumers, family members, providers, other stakeholders and citizens of the county to participate in a collective effort to create mental health awareness and erase prejudice, fear and blame and thereby reducing the stigma and disparities that exist in the African American community.
