RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Employment and Human Services Director, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $600,000 from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to initiate a supporting military father involvement program.

FISCAL IMPACT:

$600,000: 100% Federal Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CFDA #93.136)

BACKGROUND:

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is soliciting research applications that will help advance our knowledge of effective strategies for engaging the participation of fathers and male caregivers in evidence-based parenting programs that may prevent child maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
The Service Integration Team (SIT) currently operates a California Department of Social Services (CDSS) funded fatherhood program (Supporting Father Involvement) and proposes to modify the existing curriculum and seek funding from the CDC for a new expanded program. The new program will submitted a proposal to the CDC to revise and expand focus on its existing fatherhood program. The focus of the new fatherhood program will be on improving the relationship between co-parents where one is a military veteran who has served in Iraq or returning military veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan who have children 11 years old or younger.
