RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Librarian, or designee, to close the Concord Library to the public from January 10 through January 25, 2022, in order to remove existing shelving in the children’s room, paint the interior of the children’s room, and to install new carpet and new shelving in the children’s room.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The shelving ($49,263) is funded by the Library and the carpet and paint ($13,394) is funded by the City of Concord.

BACKGROUND:

The Library and the City of Concord are partnering to conduct a planned interior facility improvement for the Concord Library's children’s room. To ensure public and staff safety while the work is being performed, the Concord Library will close on Monday, January 10, 2022, and reopen on Tuesday, January 25, 2022. Shelving has been purchased and scheduled for installation, and the City of Concord Public Works has scheduled the paint and carpet work.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)

During the closure, Concord library staff will be temporarily reassigned to other library locations to fill vacant positions. The book drop will not be open at the Concord location and holds will not be available for
pickup. Those needing library services during the closure can visit the nearby Pleasant Hill Temporary Library, Walnut Creek Library, Clayton Library, or any other Contra Costa County Library.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

The Library will be unable to conduct the planned facility improvements at the Concord Library.

CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:

Improving and refreshing the interior of the Concord Library’s children’s room meets all five community outcomes established in the Children's Report Card. The facility improvement will create a safe, welcoming and interactive space for the children, families, and caregivers and will nurture reading and lifelong learning for those that visit the Concord Library. Research shows that early and positive experiences with books and reading set the stage for a child's success in learning to read. The improvements made to the children’s room will draw more families to the library and encourage regular exposure to reading and books and promote lifelong learning for children and families in Concord and those that visit from other areas.
