RECOMMENDATION(S):

ACCEPT the 2017 report from the Employment and Human Services Department on the CalFresh program, formerly known as Food Stamps and federally known as the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No fiscal impact.

BACKGROUND:

The CalFresh program, formerly known as Food Stamps and federally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), was designed to help provide assistance to hungry people, regardless of their age, gender, marital or familial status. The program issues monthly electronic benefits that can be used to buy most foods at many markets and food stores. The SNAP Program was originally referred to the Family and Human Services Committee by the Board or Supervisors on February 15, 2011.  
  

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
The Family and Human Services Committee reviewed and accepted the CalFresh Program Report (attached) at its August 28, 2017 meeting.  
  
  
  

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

The Board will not receive its annual update on the CalFresh Program provided by the Employment and Human Services Department.
