RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Sheriff-Coroner, or designee, to execute a contract amendment with Managed Health Network, to increase the payment limit by $27,264 to a new payment limit of $190,848 and extend the contract termination date from September 30, 2012 to March 31, 2013, to provide counseling services to Sheriff-Coroner employees.

FISCAL IMPACT:

$27,264.00, 100% County General Fund; Budgeted.

BACKGROUND:

The Office of the Sheriff is requesting an amendment to the contract with Managed Health Network to provide counseling services to Sheriff-Coroner employees. The additional months of this amendment will provide continued service while the Office of the Sheriff explores other vendors to provide these services.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)

The Sheriff and others in the law enforcement field feel that stress counseling can reduce workers compensation and disability retirement claims. This program has become an essential part of the overall employee assistance package and many employees have received significant help in their personal and professional lives by utilizing the available services. Board approval was necessary to approve the original contract due to the language changes in mutual indemnification which County Counsel approved.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

There is the potential for the increase in stress related workers compensation claims and disability claims if counseling services are not provided as part of a comprehensive employee assistance program.
