RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Employment & Human Services Interim Director, or designee, to apply for and accept funding from First Five Contra Costa in an amount not to exceed $3,600 for Preschool Make A Difference grant to fund the purchase of outdoor equipment for three County childcare centers during the term December 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013.

BACKGROUND:

The department is submitting a grant to purchase outdoor equipment for several County childcare centers. If awarded, a total of $3,600 will be disbursed to George Miller III, Lavonia Allen and Riverview childcare centers. Equipment includes 2-person bicycles, portable basketball hoops, bike path street signs, balls and sound station equipment using recycled materials, pots, pans, spoons and cans and woodworking materials.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If not approved, outside equipment will not be purchased for several County childcare centers.

CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:

The Community Services Bureau of the Employment & Human Services Department supports three of Contra Costa County’s community outcomes - Outcome 1: “Children Ready for and Succeeding in School,” Outcome 3: “Families that are Economically Self-sufficient,” and, Outcome 4: “Families that are Safe, Stable, and Nurturing.” These outcomes are achieved by offering comprehensive services, including high quality early childhood education, nutrition, and health services to low-income children throughout Contra Costa County.
