RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Employment and Human Services Director, or designee, to accept First Five of Contra Costa, Preschool Makes a Difference Program grant funding in an amount not to exceed $5,100 for one-time classroom learning materials for the period December 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012.

FISCAL IMPACT:

County to receive up to $5,100 from First Five of Contra Costa, Preschool Makes a Difference Program. (No County match)

BACKGROUND:

The following sites participating in the First Five of Contra Costa, Preschool Makes a Difference (PMD) Program, were awarded a one-time classroom learning materials grant to order supplies to enhance the classroom environment and children's learning. The amount award to each site was determined by the number of classrooms at each site participating in the PMD Program.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)

Bella Monte, George Miller III, Brookside and Lake classroom sites were awarded $600 per site based on one classroom participation in the PM Program. (4 sites x $600 = $2400)
Lavonia Allen, Riverview and George Miller Concord classroom sites were awarded $900 per site based on two classroom participation in the PMD Program. (3 sites x $900 = $2700)

The grant total for all sites is $5,100.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

Without funding, classroom supplies for the proposed funded sites would be reduced.

CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:

The grant will support two of the community outcomes established in the Children's Report Card, 1) "Children Ready for and Succeeding in School" and "Children and Youth Healthy and Preparing for Productive Adulthood" by providing necessary classroom supplies to enhance the classroom environment and encourage learning.
