RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Employment and Human Services Director, or designee, to accept Contra Costa County Office of Education grant funding in an amount not to exceed $5,000 for professional development services for the period December 1, 2011 through May 31, 2012 .

FISCAL IMPACT:

County to receive $5,000 in grant funds from the Contra Costa County Office of Education. No County match.

BACKGROUND:

The funding will be used at the Community Services Bureau, George Miller III site with site staff goals to:

  • Enhance teaching staff knowledge of Reggio Emilia learning approach to promote high quality learning opportunities that support collaboration and team work
  • Foster positive relations and interactions by engaging teachers, children and parents in long term learning
  • Promote a learning culture where teachers, children and parents explore the topics of interest together as co-learners.
  • Activities include, but are not limited to:  
    • Staff will be provided training on the key principles of Reggio Emilio approach.
    • Training will engage teams in activities and will foster learning through participation.
    • Center based teams will develop a training plan based on the information learned.
    • Teaching staff and the team will model the practices and be a resource for other teachers.
    • Center based teams will establish a learning community and will be able to train co-workers on the Reggio Emilia inspired approach.

    CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

    Without grant funding, professional development services provided by Employment and Human Services Depratment, Community Services Bureau would be curtailed.

    CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:

    The grant will support two of the community outcomes established in the Children's Report Card 1) "Children Ready for and Succeeding in School" and 4) "Families that are Safe, Stable and Nurturing" by providing high quality learning opportunities and collaboration for staff and engaging teachers, children, and parents in long term learning.
