BACKGROUND:
The Alcohol and Other Drugs Advisory Board was created in 1992 by the Board of Supervisors. Their mission is to assess family and community needs regarding treatment and prevention of alcohol and drug abuse problems, and to report the findings and recommendations to the Health Services Department, the Board of Supervisors and the community that they serve.
The Alcohol and Other Drugs Advisory Board is comprised of twenty-one members (20 members ans one alternate). Members shall have a professional interest in, or personal commitment to, alleviating problems related to drug abuse and inappropriate alcohol use in their community. The alternate member can sit and vote for any of the five At-large seats on the Committee. If a vacancy occurs, the alternate will automatically assume the vacant At-large seat. The membership breakdown is as follows:
- Three representatives to be nominated by each member of the Board of Supervisors.
- Five at-large members to be nominated by the Internal Operations Committee to insure geographic, racial and ethnic diversity on the Advisory Board.
- One alternate member to be nominated by the Internal Operations Committee.
Members serve for three year terms.
Supervisor Gioia advertises District 1 advisory board openings in a variety of ways including through the newspaper, his eblasts, his newsletter and his website. All candidates who submit an application are interviewed.
Marilou Sturges, a resident of El Cerrito, is completing a course at UC-Berkeley Extension to become a certified alcoholism and drug abuse counselor. She has a B.A degree from UC-Berkeley and Mount Holyoke College. She's applying to Masters in Social Work graduate programs. She has been active in AA's 12-step programs.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
The seat will remain unfilled.
