Recent data from the 2019 Contra Costa County Healthy Stores Healthy Communities (CCC-HSHC) Survey data revealed that there are 22 retailers located in Bay Point including small food markets, small convenient stores and tobacco smoke shops that carry very low to moderate refrigeration for fresh produce, dairy, eggs, milk, grains, and meats. Unfortunately, this leaves Bay Point residents to rely on the weekly food programs offered through the local community produce plus hubs (schools and recreation center), partner food pantries, and senior food programs at a local church. Moreover, in February 2021, the CCHS-HSHC provided a Town Hall presentation to all County residents about its data findings and heard anecdotal evidence from Bay Point community members of the dearth of fresh fruits and vegetables in the area and the dire need for food security resources in the area.
The HRG Program will allow the Health Services Department to provide healthy retail outreach, technical expertise, and refrigeration equipment application assistance in low-income and low-food access areas of Bay Point to increase access points for consumers to purchase healthy food options. The Department will conduct outreach through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, offer culturally and linguistically appropriate, hands-on technical assistance, nutrition education, and marketing materials, and support corner stores in applying and implementing equipment grants.
Approval of Grant Agreement #78-011 will allow the County to receive funding for the HRG Program through October 1, 2024. This agreement includes mutual indemnification for all claims, losses, causes of action, judgements, damages and expenses caused by their officers, agents or employees.
If this agreement is not approved, Bay Point residents will continue to have a dearth of fresh fruits and vegetables effecting their overall health and wellness.
