BACKGROUND:
The “Curiosity Creates” Grant is offered through the Association for Library Service to Children and is sponsored by Disney. The grant is intended to fund creative programming in the public library. It can be used to expand existing programming and/or create new opportunities for children to explore their creativity. The receipt of this grant will positively impact the Pittsburg community by providing a number of tested creative STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programs and will bring Science Center programming to a community that often has little access to quality museum experiences. Additionally, this grant would provide each 5 th grade student in Pittsburg a copy of an award-winning book on the future exploration of Mars. NASA Scientists will visit the Pittsburg Library and a number of related programs will allow children to explore creativity.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
Though the Pittsburg Library will be able to execute some of the proposed programming without grant funds, the Library will be extremely limited in bringing the Science Center programming to the Pittsburg community. The Library also will not have the funds available to provide the 5th grade students copies of Dr. Lee’s book, Mission: Mars and the accompanying “Training Manual” that encourages a number of creative learning opportunities.
CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:
The “Curiosity Creates” grant supports the “Children Ready for and Succeeding in School” and “Communities that are Safe and Provide a High Quality of Life for Children and Families” outcomes. The programming included in the grant details a number of activities designed to encourage children’s creativity and partners with the schools to support their educational growth. The funding will provide an under-resourced community learning opportunities by bringing high quality museum experiences to the library.
