RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $5,000 from DOW to provide a Robotics Lab in the Oakley Library, for the period February 1, 2016 through January 31, 2017.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No Library Fund match.

BACKGROUND:

The mission of the Dow Pittsburg Community Grant (CAP) is to promote the relationship between DOW and surrounding communities. This grant will have a tremendous impact on the Oakley Library, and beyond. The robotics lab kits will last for many years and will be used in the Library for library programs for several years into the future. The Oakley Library will share the kits with other libraries. The kits will provide free STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) learning opportunities to all families in Oakley, including those who may not otherwise have access to quality, out of school programs.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

The lack of a robotics lab at the Oakley Library.

Participation in the Oakley Library Robotics Program will improve the academic achievement of all students by giving them the opportunity to learn math, science, engineering and technology skills in a fun, hands-on, participatory learning environment.
