Information
Referral History:
On November 3, 2020, the Board of Supervisors referred to the Sustainability Committee (Committee) the question of how to best engage and encourage other Contra Costa employers to consider accepting the Cut the Commute Challenge. The Committee is asked to report back to the Board in March 2021.

The Sustainability Committee discussed the Cut the Commute Pledge referral at its November 9, 2020 meeting. The Committee emphasized the complexity of the issue, equity considerations with telecommuting, and the importance of discussing the issue with employers moving forward. The Committee suggested it would be valuable to look at Measure X from the Transportation Commission to inform decisions regarding transit systems and working from home.

The Committee concluded that there should be a joint effort and multi-party conversation about working from home that includes 511 Contra Costa (the County’s transportation demand management program), Contra Costa Transportation Authority, East Bay Leadership Council, labor unions, and transit. Staff committed to working with 511 Contra Costa to create a plan for a working group that could be brought to the next Committee meeting in January, and then the Board of Supervisors.
Referral Update:
511 Contra Costa has prepared the attached presentation, which summarizes steps that 511 Contra Costa is taking related to Work from Home programs and policies, and issues it anticipates may arise. 511 Contra Costa is ready to continue working with the County Sustainability Committee on these and related issues.
Recommendation(s)/Next Step(s):
RECEIVE UPDATE on "Cut the Commute" Challenge and PROVIDE DIRECTION.
Fiscal Impact (if any):
There is no fiscal impact at this time, beyond staff time spent on this matter.
