Referral Update:

The Sustainability Commission Chair provides an update at each meeting of the Sustainability Committee on the work of the Commission.

On September 22, 2020, the Board of Supervisors adopted a Climate Emergency Resolution. The Sustainability Commission recommended this to the Board last year, and after much work by the Sustainability Commission and the Sustainability Committee, in consultation with community members, the Resolution was adopted unanimously.

At its October 26, 2020 meeting, the Sustainability Commission received a report from staff on the action and progress to date on implementing the Climate Emergency Resolution. See Attachment A for a status report. The Commission has asked that this become a regular agenda item at its meetings.

Specific to the action item in the Climate Emergency Resolution regarding helping the County anticipate and plan for an economy that is less dependent on fossil fuels and helps plan for a "Just Transition" away from a fossil-fuel dependent economy, the status report included case studies of other jurisdictions that have undertaken for similar transitions. The Commission wants to call this research to the Sustainability Committee's attention. Common themes that come through the research include communication, proactive planning, and strong governance.

The Sustainability Commission will continue to research and advise the Sustainability Committee and the Board of Supervisors on how to plan for and implement a Just Transition.
