RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Fire Chief, or designee, to apply for and accept grant funding from the Federal Highway Safety Program, California State Transportation Agency Office of Traffic Safety in an amount not to exceed $30,000, for the purchase of rescue equipment.

FISCAL IMPACT:

100% Federal grant funds

BACKGROUND:

The California Office of Traffic and Safety (OTS) is tasked with developing and implementing a highway safety program that addresses the behavioral factors that impact safety on the road. The goal of the annual program is to prevent serious injury and death resulting from motor vehicle crashes so that all roadway users arrive at their destination safely. Using Federal Highway Safety Program funds, the OTS partners with political subdivisions of the state to address California’s highway safety needs at the state, county and local level.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (District) will apply for funds to purchase a full edraulics set for Fire Engine 69. The set includes three battery operated rescue tools (spreader, cutter, and ram) used to remove a person from a vehicle that has been involved in an accident. The edraulic tools allow firefighters to efficiently extract the victim while minimizing additional injury in the process.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

The District will not be able to apply for and accept this grant funding for new rescue equipment.
