RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Administrator, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $5,000 from the California State Library to provide funds for cultural programming in support of Kensington Reads, a One City, One Book program at the Kensington Library for the period of January 2011 through September 2011.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No library fund match.

BACKGROUND:

The California State Library makes available federal Library Services and Technology Act funds to develop programs and services in libraries. The implementation of this grant will provide literary and cultural programming to adults and children in the community of Kensington. This programming will not only educate and inspire directly, but will also promote the Kensington Library’s first Kensington Reads, a One City, One Book project which will encourage all community members to come together to read and discuss the same book.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If the board order is not approved then the Kensington Library will not be able to apply for grant funds to support the Kensington Reads program.

CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:

The grant will provide literary and cultural programming for children and families thereby supporting the outcome established in the Children’s Report Card: Communities that are Safe and Provide a High Quality of Life for Children and Families.
