RECOMMENDATION(S):

ADOPT Position Resolution No. 20871 to add one permanent full-time Pharmacist I (represented) position at salary level QT5 1998 ($7,725.46 - 8,943.18) in the Health Services Department.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is an annual cost of approximately $156,083.52, which is 100% offset through Federal Information Technology Revenues.

BACKGROUND:

The Health Services Department is requesting to add one permanent full-time Pharmacist I position in the Pharmacy Division of the Contra Costa Medical Regional Center.

The Department is in the process of implementing a new computerized EPIC (a comprehensive software that integrates management of health care information) system . In the Pharmacy Division, we currently have one Pharmacist I position dedicated to this assignment. However, the new system requires not one but two Pharmacists to effectively install and maintain its large database.

The addition of this position will create a team of two Pharmacists who will share responsibility for all system modules including Bedside Medication Verification (BMV), Medication Administration Record (eMAR), and the Computerized Physician Order Entry (electronic dispensing and order entry of medications) - one will be in charge of the hematology/oncology medication management while the other will be in charge of all other medications.

This system will decrease medication errors and improve patient safety.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

It this action is not approved, the Pharmacy Division will not have sufficient staff to meet its operational needs, which impacts patient care services and delay the implementation of the new computerized system.
