RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Employment & Human Services Director, or designee to apply for and accept funding from United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in an amount not to exceed $11,400 for USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant for the term March 1, 2010 through December 31, 2010.

BACKGROUND:

The Department's Community Services Bureau is applying for funding from USDA to create a gardening program at each of the 19 County-operated children's centers. The purpose of the program is to promote social skill building and to teach children about nature and nutrition through gardening. If funded, the project will include a raised bed kit, resource guides, children's gardening tools and seeds so that each center may install and maintain fruit and vegetable gardens.  
  
The funding is $600 per center (19 children's centers) for a total funding amount not to exceed $11,400.
