The U.S. Department of Homeland Security identified 35 urban areas for targeted homeland security efforts throughout the country through the Urban Area Security Initiative Grant Program (UASI). UASI funds address the unique planning, equipment, training, and exercise needs of high threat, high density urban areas, and assist them in building an enhanced and sustainable capacity to prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism. California is home to five of these urban areas; the Bay Area UASI, for which the City and County of San Francisco is the fiscal agent, has received a total of $28,320,000. The Office of the Sheriff has been participating with the other nine Bay Area counties, the cities of San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose, and with the California Emergency Management Agency (CalEMA) as part of the Bay Area SUASI. The targeted Super UASI (SUASI) homeland security funding for the County is to develop inter-operable communications between the County and other Bay Area SUASI members, and to perform information sharing and collaboration and citizen preparedness.
