RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $6,000 from Target Corporation to provide early childhood reading materials, equipment and programs for the Antioch, El Cerrito and Hercules libraries for the period September 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No Library Fund match.

BACKGROUND:

Target Corporation awards annual grants to schools, libraries and nonprofit organizations to support early childhood reading birth through 3rd grade. Children prepare to read long before they enter school. They need a variety of literacy skills to become readers and achieve success in school. By providing books, equipment, programs and child friendly environments with a variety of educational experiences, the library assists parents in helping their children develop early literacy skills.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

The Library will not be able to provide early literacy programs if the funds are not awarded.

CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:

Funds received will promote literacy, language development and reading readiness among children ages birth through five thereby supporting outcome #1 established in the Children's Report Card: Children Ready for and Succeeding in School.
