RECOMMENDATION(S):

Approve and authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee (Wendel Brunner, M.D.), to execute, on behalf of the County, Grant Agreement #28-318 with San Diego State University Research Foundation, to pay the County an amount not to exceed $1,394 for the Smart Growth Professional Development Project, for the period from March 1, 2009 through February 28, 2010, including agreeing to indemnify and hold the grantor harmless for any claims arising out of the County’s performance under the Agreement.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Approval of this grant will result in $1,394 from San Diego State University Research Foundation to fund the Smart Growth Professional Development Project for the Public Health, Community Wellness and Prevention Programs (CW&PP). No County match required.

BACKGROUND:

In recent years, Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) has become a leader among Bay Area Health Departments in researching and applying “built environment” approaches to injury prevention. Ensuring that local governments adopt policies that foster safe walking and bicycling environments for children is a goal that can create healthier, more active communities. The goal of this Smart Growth Professional Development Project is to further the professional development of County staff working to prevent unintentional childhood injuries. Approval of this Grant Agreement #28-318 will support conference attendance for a Senior Health Education Specialist to learn about built environment focused strategies to promote health and safety through February 28, 2010.
