BACKGROUND:

2008 Highlights of the Green Business Program

  • 60 new Green Businesses in Contra Costa, with over 1,600 in the Bay Area.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
  • Three public agencies were certified, including the El Cerrito and Lafayette City Halls and 511 Contra Costa.
  • Adding on a new program partner: 511 Contra Costa, whose focus is moving people out of their cars and into car and van pools, as well as public transportation, makes the program’s 24th partner agency/city (see the entire list on the attached annual report).
  • Celebrated the program’s ten-year anniversary in April at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum, with DeSaulnier welcoming, Boxer’s office sharing a proclamation regarding the program’s success and the president of the U.S. Green Building Council speaking on why it’s important to be green.
  • Created an eight minute video highlighting the importance of a business going green through the examples of four successful Green Businesses: M Service in Walnut Creek, Bill’s Ace Hardware in Martinez, Pleasant Hill and Concord, Vetrazzo in Richmond, and Canyon Construction in Moraga.
  • Raised certification standards to match the latest green trends—and to prevent “greenwashing” (a business that markets themselves as green, but isn’t green). We also have laid the foundation to take the program paperless with a web-based enrollment and checklist form (work done with two grants from the Department of Toxic Substances Control).
  • A full-page ad in the Contra Costa Times listing all of our Green Businesses, and completion of a marketing toolkit for Green Businesses to help them market themselves as green.
  • Green Business Program
All Green Business meet the high standards of environmental excellence set by the Program’s partnership:

    • They fully comply with all our environmental agencies: Hazardous Materials, fire, storm water, wastewater and the Air District; and
    • They conserve eneergy, water andother natural resources; and prevent pollution from hazardous wastes.
The program’s partners—24 environmental agencies and cities in Contra Costa—have worked hard this last year to achieve our vision of Contra Costa as a place where businesses contribute to the sustainability of our communities by being green themselves. Our annual report should help convey the accomplishments of this past year.
