RECOMMENDATION(S):

ACCEPT the report on the federal appropriations advocacy meetings in Washington, D.C., as recommended by the Legislation Committee.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The County is well-positioned by this trip to secure financial assistance for our requested projects in the Federal Fiscal Year 2010 budget and the reauthorization of the federal transportation bill.

BACKGROUND:

In the early part of each year, the Chair and Vice Chair of the Board of Supervisors travel to Washington, D.C., along with the Legislative Coordinator, to advocate for federal funding for projects included in the County’s Federal Legislative Platform. Due to prior commitments, the Vice Chair was unable to attend.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
This year, the trip was planned to coincide with the National Association of Counties (NACo) Legislative Conference. Fortunately for the County, because Supervisor Glover and Dr. Walker were scheduled to be in Washington, D.C. for NACo and other association meetings, they were able to attend some of the advocacy meetings scheduled with our congressional delegation and provide valuable advocacy and information.

All in all, it was a successful trip because relationships with our Congressional delegation and their staffs, as well as key committee staff, were advanced. The County is well-positioned by this trip to secure much-needed financial assistance for our requested projects. Our congressional delegation and their staffs, along with various committee staff, were provided packets of information about our projects, the Supervisors had an opportunity to explain the importance of the projects to the County and the region, and staff was able to respond to specific questions about the projects.
