RECOMMENDATION(S):

ADOPT Resolution to recognize Sabiha Gokcen for her 16 years of service to the Contra Costa County Hazardous Materials Commission.

FISCAL IMPACT:

None.

BACKGROUND:

Sabiha Gokcen began her service on the Contra Costa County Hazardous Materials Commission in 1993 representing Communities for a Safer Environment in one of the Environmental Seats. In 1997 she changed to representing the Contra Costa Taxpayers Association in one of the business seats. In 2005 she was elected by the other members of the Commission to be Chairperson, a position she held for four years until her term expired at the end of 2008.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
During her 16 years on the Contra Costa County Hazardous Materials Commission Sabiha Gokcen contributed substantially to the efforts of the Commission, especially in the field of industrial safety, where her expertise and leadership helped craft a series of accident prevention and land use ordinances leading to the eventual adoption of Contra Costa County’s landmark Industrial Safety Ordinance.

As Chairperson, Sabiha Gokcen led the Commission in a fair and even-handed manner, creating an open and inclusive forum that encouraged a free exchange of ideas and consensus-based decision making.
