RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Interim County Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $900 from East Bay Community Foundation, administered by the Rodeo Municipal Advisory Council, to provide Spanish-English early literacy programs for the Rodeo Library pursuant to the local refinery Good Neighbor Agreement, for the period July 1 through December 31, 2014.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No Library Fund match.

BACKGROUND:

The Rodeo Library is requesting funds from the Rodeo Municipal Advisory Council in order to provide a series of Spanish-English storytime programs for children age three to five. The programs will engage children in literacy activities including stories, crafts, and dramatic play. Employing a bilingual environment, children will learn early literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. The children will also learn a love of books and reading from a young age.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If the funds are not received then the Spanish-English programs will not occur.

CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:

Emphasizing Spanish-English story times centered around early literacy and kindergarten readiness through stories, crafts, and dramatic play, the program series funded by the grant will meet the Children's Report Card outcome of Children Ready for and Succeeding in School.
