RECOMMENDATION(S):

Approve and authorize the Purchasing Agent, on behalf of Health Services Department, to execute a Blanket Purchase Order with Abbott Medical Optics Inc., in the amount of $300,000, for equipment and supplies for cataract surgery at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center, for the period from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2013.

FISCAL IMPACT:

100% Enterprise Fund I.

BACKGROUND:

Abbott Medical Optics, Inc. (AMO) manufactures the equipment used in cataract surgery cases in the Operating Room at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center. The AMO Phacoemulsifier uses ultrasonic waves to break up the cataract and then aspirates the material into a suction canister. AMO provides the proprietary hand pieces, tubing and blades associated with the cataract procedures as well as the lens inserted in the into the eye after the cataract is removed. AMO is used because so much of the consumables are proprietary and cannot be purchased through another vendor.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If this Contract is not approved, cataract eye procedures could not be performed at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center.
