RECOMMENDATION(S):

Approve and authorize the Health Services Director or his designee (Wendel Brunner, M.D.), to accept on behalf of the County, a grant award (#29-679) from University of California San Francisco (UCSF), to pay the County an amount not to exceed $40,000 for the Dental Fluoride Reach Study Project, for the period from May 1, 2009 through November 1, 2010.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Acceptance of this Grant Award will result in an amount not to exceed $40,000 from University of California San Francisco (UCSF) for Dental Fluoride Reach Study Project. No County funds are required.

BACKGROUND:

The Fluoride Reach Project to prevent early childhood cavities is part of the UCSF Center to address disparities in children’s oral health. This NIH-funded program is conducted by several UCSF doctors from the School of Medicine and Dentistry. In collaboration with UCSF, Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Health Centers will conduct a study on ways to deliver Fluoride Varnish (FV), a non-invasive, low cost, evidence-based, dental cavities preventative agent, to children ages one (1) through three (3) years in low-income families.

Approval of Grant Award Agreement #29-679 will allow USCF to pay the County to fund the Fluoride Reach Project, to support dental services and equipment through November 1, 2010.

Three sealed and certified copies of the Board should be returned to the Contracts and Grants Unit.
