RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Sheriff-Coroner, or designee, to enter into an Interagency Agreement with the Contra Costa Redevelopment Agency to pay the Sheriff-Coroner an amount up to $185,000 for the services of one Deputy Sheriff in the North Richmond Redvelopment area for the period of April 15, 2009 through April 14, 2010. (100% Redvelopment Agency funding)

FISCAL IMPACT:

$185,000; 100% Redevelopment Agency funding.

BACKGROUND:

In a joint effort to provide more police services for the North Richmond community, the Contra Costa County Community Development Department, the Redevelopment Agency, the Contra Costa County Health Services Department, and the Contra Costa County Housing Authority have all committed current or additional funding to increase the number of resident deputy sheriffs in North Richmond. The current resident deputies assigned to the North Richmond community are providing services at a static post; therefore, other areas of North Richmond do not have the benefit of this enhanced police service. The increased law enforcement presence will be a deterrent for crime, illegal dumping, drugs, and will enhance better community relations.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

By not approving funding, the entire North Richmond community will not have enhanced law enforcement coverage
