RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Employment & Human Services Department director, or designee, to apply for and accept grant funds from the Kaiser Permanent Community Benefit Program not to exceed $29,000 for a physical activity initiative for the term July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010.

FISCAL IMPACT:

100% Private grant funding of $29,000. There is no County match required to receive the funds.

BACKGROUND:

The Employment & Human Services Department, Community Services Bureau is submitting a grant application to Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit Program in the amount of $28,991 for the term July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010 for a healthy children's initiative program.

The proposed project, if funded, will address three goals:  
(1) To increase the quantity of time children spend in moderate to vigorous physical activity during their daily routine, to meet national guidelines for physical activity;  
(2) To improve structured movement experiences intentionally facilitated by teachers and parents;  
(3) To improve the healthy nutrition choices for children.  
  
Approval of this board order will allow the Department to accept funds and implement the program upon notification of grant award.   
  

CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:

The Employment & Human Services Department Community Services Bureau supports three of Contra Costa County’s community outcomes - Outcome 1: “Children Ready for and Succeeding in School,” Outcome 3: “Families that are Economically Self-sufficient,” and, Outcome 4: “Families that are Safe, Stable, and Nurturing.” These outcomes are achieved by offering comprehensive services, including high quality early childhood education, nutrition, and health services to low-income children throughout Contra Costa County.
