RECOMMENDATION(S):

Approve and authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee (Jeff Smith, M.D.) to execute on behalf of the County, Contract #26-347-15 with MedStaff Inc. (dba Medstaff Healthcare Solutions), a corporation, in an amount not to exceed $200,000, to provide temporary nursing, therapy pharmacy, and radiology services for Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Contra Costa Health Centers, for the period from May 1, 2009 through April 30, 2010.

FISCAL IMPACT:

This Contract is funded 100% by Enterprise I Funds.

BACKGROUND:

For several years, the County has contracted with nursing registries to provide temporary licensed nursing personnel to assist Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and the Contra Costa Health Centers during peak loads, temporary absences, and emergency situations. There continues to be a nationwide nursing shortage, and in spite of persistent efforts to recruit nurses, the Department has experienced difficulty in filling vacant positions. Therefore, the Department has had to rely heavily on the registry services in order to provide quality-nursing care for patients.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)

On July 8, 2008, the Board of Supervisors approved Contract #26-347-14 with MedStaff, Inc., for the period from May 1, 2008 through April 30, 2009, for the provision of temporary help nursing, therapy and radiology services for Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Contra Costa Health Centers.

Approval of Contract #26-347-15 will allow the Contractor to continue providing services through April 30, 2010.
