RECOMMENDATION(S):

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant for the Pittsburg Library in the amount of $5,900 from the American Library Association, under an initiative made possible by Dollar General Literacy Foundation, to provide English language adult literacy materials along with English conversation summer programs, for the period June 1 through August 31, 2015.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No Library Fund match.

BACKGROUND:

The American Library Association has been a grantor for Contra Costa County Library in previous “@ your library” initiatives. Programs and materials for the initiatives have made a positive impact in Contra Costa County Libraries. Programs aimed at enhancing adult literacy through “The American Dream Starts @ your library” will provide Pittsburg adult community members with English learning programs and materials. Programs will coincide with, and encourage adult parent and caregiver participation in, "Lunch @ the library" in Summer 2015--a program that provides lunch at the Pittsburg Library for children during the summer. Although programs and lunch will take place during the summer, English language materials will be added to the Pittsburg Library permanent collection and made available to the public throughout the year.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

The Library will not participate in “The American Dream Starts @ your library.”
